Wall Street Can’t Stop Hyping Up AI

Over the last month, publicly traded companies that dipped into the AI frenzy have been consistently rewarded with stock price increases and goodwill from investors.

BuzzFeed is chief among them. The former media darling announced a partnership with OpenAI to help create their famous quizzes.

Their stock rocketed over 300% last week. Even if you don’t know much about stocks, that’s a BIG number; like Joey Chestnut’s belly after an eating contest BIG.

BuzzFeed Isn’t the Only AI Benefactor

C3.ai is the lucky owner of the $AI ticker on the New York Stock Exchange. So yeah, their market cap has been getting a nice bump ever since ChatGPT launched.

Don’t get me wrong, they actually build AI tools and recently announced some new projects. But it feels like they’re getting second-hand fame from the AI hype, not because of their efforts.

C3.aI and a host of other companies like SoundHound AI and BigBear.ai can’t sustain this benefits system forever.

Remember when every company that slapped “.com” on their name got a huge investment bump? For the Gen Z readers in the crowd, spoiler alert: things went poorly--for everyone.

That’s a long-term problem to keep an eye on, but the news around BuzzFeed and Wall Street’s hype does nothing to quell my fears.

You shouldn’t panic but stay vigilant, like Batman brooding over Gotham.

When ET Phones Home, AI Will Answer

First, I’ll nip this in the bud: scientists did not discover alien life. They taught an AI algorithm to search for radio “technosignatures,” and it found eight signals worth checking out.

Even better, this was an old dataset that the old algorithms missed. It’s a great sign for the advancement of Artificial Intelligence and its utility in scientific studies.

Which brings me to an off-topic point: what does Bill Nye think of all the new AI stuff?

Someone should ask him.

Anyway, Those Signals are Likely Rare Cases of Radio Interference

All that means is the AI did not find technosignatures, but that would be hard to do. The researchers' write up explains that finding this sign of intelligence out there is like finding a needle in a cosmic haystack.

You'll notice this is a very superhero heavy newsletter today

Still, using this new algorithm would be the right direction if I wanted to delegate that task.

Do YOU want to search for a cosmic needle in the vastness of space? Didn’t think so.

But I'll sure as hell be celebrating when we find some alien dude chilling on a planet listening to some technosignature tunes. That is as long as he's nothing like Jar Jar Binks...
