🤖 The Harry Potter Test For Data

PLUS: Call of Duty Uses AI To Fix Huge Problem

What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. Welcome to Fall, y’all. The leaves change colors, but our newsletter never changes (except when we do redesigns).

Here's some crisp headlines to enjoy:

  • The Harry Potter tests illustrate data leverage

  • Call of Duty wants AI to make it less toxic

  • Cohere wants more money

  • VCs are cooling on their AI investing spree

Let’s talk about copyright and data leverage using Harry Potter.

Many lawsuits are hanging in the air, jeopardizing all the work startups do to build AI models. But how important are these copyrighted books and articles?

That measurement is called “data leverage.”

Think of every Large Language Model as a gigantic Jenga tower that stacks layer upon layer of information. You can remove some of those blocks and be okay. However, some of them are crucial to keeping the whole thing standing.

Are those blocks more valuable and, therefore, deserve some sort of compensation? That feels fair, but how do we stress-test these information networks to find those blocks?

That’s where Harry Potter comes in.

Harry Potter testifies in court --ar 2:1

Researchers conducted a test with Harry Potter books where they tested a variety of models with only one variable: the number of Harry Potter books included in the dataset.

It turns out that missing even one book caused a noticeable downgrade in performance. But don’t go handing a paycheck over to JK Rowling quite yet.

That’s one experiment with one type of model.

It’s relatively apparent that AI can’t answer questions about a subject it doesn’t have data on, and we’re far away from a straightforward way to measure data leverage.

So keep an eye on this concept because it’s bound to come up in future lawsuits and copyright arguments. It’s been a part of fair use since the dawn of the justice system.

How much replication of a piece is too much replication? It’s the same debate we had with sampling and collages. This argument is far from new and not even close to settled.

If you’ve spent time in a Call of Duty lobby, you know how toxic they are.

That’s why the developers behind the game are searching for a way to moderate harassment and hate speech in CoD because it keeps people from wanting to play the game. The solution revolves around an AI tool called ToxMod (what a great name).

ToxMod listens to lobbies and flags inappropriate conversations.

This tech sounds simple at first glance, but ToxMod is doing more than listening for keywords. The AI monitors speech volume and pace to determine how friendly the banter is.

Raising your voice matters as much as what you say, which is a novel way to approach game moderation.

However, the tool isn’t there to suspend players and dole out sentences.

ToxMod flags the transgressions and sends them to human moderators to handle. It’s a brilliant blend of human-machine cooperation.

If this works, maybe, MAYBE, I’ll try my hand at CoD again; I just can’t handle being called a noob with a loose mother every five seconds, you know?
