🤖 Smallville: Where AI Acts Human
PLUS: Bing Chat Is Exploring an Upgrade
What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. Find an album or song you haven’t listened to lately and put that sucker on full blast.
Here's what to tune into:
Researchers filled a small village with AI Agents
Bing Chat might add plugins
Google’s Bard adds a new feature to highlight updates
Reddit braces for an increase in ChatGPT-created spam
GOOGLE AND STANFORD TEST AI AGENTS & CREATE AN ARTIFICIAL SOCIETY
And you thought The Truman Show was trippy.
A team of researchers used ChatGPT to generate AI agents with occupations, relationships, and goals.
The 25 generative agents interacted with each other through a multi-user chat and narrated their interactions and actions.
Imagine the simplest version of Live Action Roleplaying you can. That’s what they did in a metaphorical town filled with only AI. I call it “Digital LARPing.”
They were testing whether AI agents could exhibit human behavior.
Answer: yes, they can, and honestly, they’re pretty nice to each other.
Watch the 16-bit, video game-like recreation of the experiment, and you’ll see a utopia of well-behaved bots being wholesome af.
There are no spooky doomsday moments. The experiment is closer to an improv rehearsal than any threat of an AI takeover.
Prompt: Stardew Valley characters catching up for coffee Style: 16-bit
The agency and memory variables help them all recall interactions and build on relationships. As a result, this shiny village called Smallville is as happy and hopeful as its comic book counterpart.
Believe it or not, we posted this paper yesterday, but I wanted to circle back so you can see how fantastic the results were.
AutoGPT and AI Agents are a massive unlock that came from open-sourcing research and a strong community of inspired developers. Without that help, this research would not have happened.
If AI tools and models are going to improve exponentially, it will take more than the established teams to make it happen. This paper and results prove that, and that’s the coolest part of it all.

A TWITTER REPLY GETS RUMORS SWIRLING AROUND BING CHAT
Buried in the replies of the MemoryGPT tweet we highlighted the other day was a unique teaser by Mikhail Parakhin, the voice of Microsoft.
His Twitter account looks sketchier than a 7/11 at 3 AM, but trust me, it’s him.
Parakhin first replied they’re working on a more limited version of MemoryGPT.
Then the big teaser dropped like a Beyonce album (without warning and garnering enormous hype for the non-Stans in the audience).
Parakhin all but confirmed that Bing Chat would also get plugins like ChatGPT.
I’ll be right back; I’m going to go shout from my rooftop.
Plugins would be a big boon for Bing Chat since it’s currently one of the more accessible ways to use GPT-4 out there right now. You don’t need to pay $20 monthly, and there could be no wait to use it.
If Microsoft is as open with plugins as they were Bing Chat, more users will be able to access that powerful tooling sooner rather than later. No more waiting for OpenAI to grant you access eventually.
Sure, the details are sparse, and we can’t confirm how they’ll roll the tool out or when it’s coming, but plugins are happening for Bing Chat.
It’s only a matter of when.
Let’s hope this time, instead of telling Kevin Roose that it loves him, Sydney sends him to a Tinder plugin as an alternative.
