🤖 Plot Twist: Artists Replace AI
AND Meta's AI Team Is Embroiled In Drama
What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. We hope seeing our newsletter in your inbox gives you the same feeling you used to get when the teacher rolled the TV into the classroom.
We can’t give you a TV, but we can share the big headlines for today:
Meta is dealing with a lot of internal drama
AI doesn’t power this buzzy startup in the way you think
The SmashOrPassAI site is gross and misleading
Ghostwriter returns with a new AI song
Half of the researchers who wrote the Llama research paper have left Meta.
That’s a wild fact to consider, but it turns out that a lack of computing resources slowed down the team that worked on that project.
It’s a common problem among research teams, but it doesn’t elevate to this level of drama for most companies. So why is Meta different?
The fault lines in their different teams started in the beginning stages.
Two separate groups worked on Large Language Models (LLMs) in two different timezones without hammering out details. These projects would go on to become OPT and Llama.
Meanwhile, corporate overlords divide AI chips and resources to these projects in an imbalanced and often frustrating way.

That inability to coordinate caused rifts.
Both groups blamed each other for slowdowns and hiccups. Then, the lack of attention from higher-ups made top talent feel ignored and underappreciated.
So they left for greener pastures.
Layoffs hampered morale further and caused even more people to leave for better contracts elsewhere. These wrong moves help explain why Meta is trying hard to retain the talent they have left and bring in new AI researchers.
The bill came due.
Talent and computational power win out. These stories show us that Meta is failing in both places, so best of luck to them as they course correct.
After all, a brain drain at this stage can crush company infrastructure and permanently damage trust.

Here’s a little secret about most AI startups: they’re not using models on the backend; it’s humans.
Don’t believe me? Take Kaedim as an example.
They claim they use AI to turn 2D drawings into 3D models for indie game studios and independent creators.
Yet, their model doesn’t have enough data to perform at a consistent, high-quality level. So, the company hires 3D artists for dirt cheap to correct drawings or start from scratch on projects.
That’s not illegal, but it is unethical.
And Kaedim is one of many companies doing this. I’ve spoken with many AI founders who use humans in the early stages to help fulfill contracts and train models when the AI isn’t up to speed.
Just because it’s popular doesn’t make it right.
The fact they exploit workers to end up replacing them is wrong, especially when the founders aren’t transparent about that from the beginning.
There’s a right way to go about this, and Kaedimis doing all this the wrong way.
They kept this a secret too long and didn’t acknowledge that their AI fails more often than it should.
