PLUS: VC Has Not Put There Money Where Their Mouth Is

OPENAI & GOOGLE STRESS OVER OPEN-SOURCE PROJECTS
Open-source AI projects are catching up to the pack and leaving the companies at the top of the mountain worried about a long fall down. And that hype cranked the dial to 11 after news dropped about OpenAI’s big plans for the future.
The creators of ChatGPT are building an open-source model for the rest of us. GPT-4 for you and yours.
That’s actually a lie. Whatever Large Language Model Sam Altman and company offer clients and developers doesn’t matter. They screw themselves by making it as good as GPT-4.
Expect them to release something like Diet GPT-4.
Google is a little behind on this, and both companies worry about their lack of a moat when making AI tools.
But does an open-source model make sense?
Hear me out. The options are out there, and they perform at a level close to the top dogs. So, why aren’t you using it?
The answer lies in the history of the internet. There are option-source operating systems, like Linux, but most people don’t use them because of the convenience and ease of using Mac or Windows.
You go to the browser for ChatGPT and Bard. It’s all you need.
Corporations can afford to train these models, but personal use is a lost ball game.
The future of AI is not open-source anymore. Instead, it’s companies rushing to make their own generative AI tools to keep collecting your data for their goals and profits.

VENTURE CAPITALISTS AREN’T AS HYPED AS WE THOUGHT
Welp. It turns out that private market investors aren’t pouring money into AI startups at the speed we all thought.
A first-quarter report from CB Insights shows a slide in AI deals done in the venture space. In Q1 of 2022, funds poured $15.7B into 883 deals within this space. This year, VCs invested $5.4B in 554 deals.
Every VC fund and Angel investor worth a penny is talking about AI, but the money isn’t following.
What gives?
The obvious answer is the lag in response time. AI hype will take a minute to show up in the numbers.
But there’s also the general market slowdown. People aren’t partying like it’s 2021 in Silicon Valley right now.
Instead, the funds burned by the crypto fallout are licking their wounds, and rushing into the next hype cycle is not a good look.
AI startups aren’t desperate for the cash either. Many of them are finding their audience and growing their cash flow without the need to scale today.
Tomorrow many of these founders will sniff around for VC money, but advisors told them to focus on building and avoid burning cash while waiting on this freeze to thaw.
We need to worry if this becomes a more prominent trend.
That would mean many early-stage companies aren’t breaking through and finding footholds. Instead, tech giants might devour their smaller competition to avoid conflict.
That’s a more significant issue we’ll need to see play out.
