🤖 OpenAI Doesn't Want Your Data
PLUS: The Humanoid Robots Are Multiplying
What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. Go ahead and mark me down for a second cup of coffee today. I’m going to need it…

SAM ALTMAN WANTS YOU TO BE COMFORTABLE
Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and let the soothing thoughts of an impending AI revolution carry you to relaxation. → That’s the vibe I get from Sam Altman these days.
We missed a significant policy change at OpenAI in the noise around ChatGPT’s API announcement.
Any developer using their APIs will automatically be opted out of data sharing. The company stores any data it collects from opted-out users for just 30 days, and OpenAI will not use it to improve its models.
Wait, Then How Will OpenAI Improve?
Don’t you worry. The company still collects data from anyone using ChatGPT, and companies can always opt-in to the policy.
The change reflects an attempt to befriend more developers. The engineers and product people who integrate these APIs into their sites are sensitive about this subject.
They don’t want OpenAI sucking in all their user data like your friend playing Kirby in Smash Bros.
More importantly, these minor tweaks offer more extensive legal protections for OpenAI. The rising AI caseload is a taunting hurdle for these companies and any way to avoid going to court is a preferred path.
The policy is dramatically simplified, too. As a result, developers will feel more welcomed by all these subtle changes, and you can expect more startups to lean towards using OpenAI’s APIs over competitors.
Don’t forget branding is a big moat in business. Sam Altman and the company are pushing for that competitive advantage by making moves like this.
Expect more signaling like this as things progress.
A ROBOT FOR EVERY HUMAN ON THIS PLANET
Figure is a startup that officially announced its efforts to create the best humanoid robot known to man.
The CEO, Brett Adcock, is investing $100m of his own funds to make this dream a reality.
Why are they doing this now? The PR sprint capitalizes on their progress and better explains their mission. Better now than never.
Figure Needs to Distinguish Itself From Tesla
The latter announced in 2022 that they were working around the clock to create the first publicly available humanoid robot for general use.
Nothing about this dream is easy—for anyone.
People applauded Tesla’s Optimus prototype for walking without support last year, and decades of research went into that one problem.
Look, building a bipedal robot for general use is complicated, y’all.
Figure wants to start where they are needed, aka industries with significant labor shortages like retail and warehousing. Then branch out.
Will they win the space? Maybe. The fact the company is willing to put in the time and money is exciting enough, and their alpha build, Figure 01, is already on the same level as Tesla’s attempt.
It’s not the AI robot war we all expected, but I prefer a corporate shootout to Skynet any day.
