Meta's Chief AI Scientist Talks ChatGPT

Meta Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun recently dished out some tough love for ChatGPT.

LeCun suggested OpenAI's tool is simply reinventing the wheel, pointing out that other companies and research labs have developed similar AI systems. While ChatGPT and its predecessor GPT-3 may seem like a breakthrough, LeCun argues they're just well-crafted and polished culminations of years of work by OpenAI's predecessors.

"In terms of underlying techniques, ChatGPT is not particularly innovative," LeCun said.

The man backed up his statements with some facts, as any researcher would. ChatGPT uses Transformer architectures, a Google invention that nowadays all language models use, and is trained using supervised and reinforcement learning techniques, which have been iterated upon for decades. He cited Yoshua Bengio's work from about 20 years ago, on the concept of attention, which Google built upon to create Transformers.

LeCun did give OpenAI its due, saying ChatGPT was a product of good AI engineering, but only after emphasizing that the company didn't do anything brand new.

"It's nothing revolutionary, although that's the way it's perceived in the public," LeCun said. "It's just that, you know, it's well put together, it's nicely done."

What about Meta's own plans for text generation, generative art, and other creation aids? LeCun made sure to reveal that the company is also in the game. He highlighted that Meta will soon be able to help small businesses promote themselves by automatically producing media for their brand. Mom-and-pop shops on Facebook may not have the resources to design a spiffy ad, so Meta plans to offer AI tools to change that.

Now then, if Google and Meta have had all the puzzle pieces to build neat AI products for so long, why didn't they get there first?

LeCun had an answer for that too: "Google and Meta have a lot to lose by putting out systems that make stuff up."
