BEWARE THE FAKE CHATGPT TOOLS ONLINE

Over 1,000 domains are peddling malware-infected tools they market as ChatGPT in your browser.

We all found this out after Meta released their security report. I mean…they released it in March, but we’re only now getting around to it.

It turns out that 10 malware families are responsible for the ploy.

Wait, that phrasing makes them sound like a mafia movie. Do they meet in secrecy and plot to destroy one another?

Doubtful, but their actions are concerning. People are downloading fake, ChatGPT-esque extensions that burrow into their personal information and make their computer leak data like a rusted pipe.

We can’t understate the impact of this issue.

App stores are hosting these browser extensions right next to the real deal, and these false AI bots pretend to be helpful.

They mimic the functions of ChatGPT while running their heist in the background. So you wouldn’t even guess it’s a faulty app until the infection does its damage.

The companies meant to protect you from this threat don’t play nicely with one another.

These peddlers rely on their ability to coordinate and move on to the next grift faster than the corporate red tape. But, since Meta, Google, Microsoft, and others act alone, their efforts don’t pack a punch and come too slow.

Now the newest versions of this scam include Google Bard extensions and TikTok marketing services.

Keep a watchful eye. It is the internet, after all.

JOE ROGAN SHOULDN’T SWEAT AUTOMATION…YET

A new interview between Joe Rogan and Sam Altman took Twitter by storm the other day, but the two were never in the same room.

It’s the first episode of The Joe Rogan AI Experience, a fictional podcast that runs off AI tools. At the time of writing, the video sits at half a million views on YouTube.

Mark it as another notch for viral AI moments, but don’t count this as a win.

The creator spoke with The Verge and admits that capturing the imperfection of human creativity in AI is hard.

So, how do you replicate humanity in AI projects?

If you watch the Sam Altman episode, you’ll see the effort to add imperfections into a perfect replication.

You can hear room noise. The AI Altman leans into the mic and gives you plenty of uhs to evoke thought.

None of that creates a suspension of disbelief.

Sam Altman talks with caution and pauses often. Joe Rogan stifles laughs and tosses in small interjections. Their AI counterparts fail to act off the cuff.

Hugo attempts to make the audio feel natural, but that effort often takes weeks.

And while the real host admits we’re spiraling towards a new age of misinformation, we’re not there yet.

In fact, I’d argue the script is the biggest tell—not the audio.

We’re all starting to account for the average, unimaginative way that ChatGPT writes. You can hear it in parts of the show, but I doubt this comfort will stay that way.

AI moves too fast for that.
