🤖 How AWS Fumbled The Bag

PLUS: The Making Of A Disinformation Machine

What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. Whatever happened to Threads?

Here's news that doesn’t go out of style:

  • See how much it costs to run a disinformation campaign

  • AWS stumbles to handle AI

  • Google releases a new research paper

  • The US Copyright Office wants to hear from you

Sam Altman warned us.

A month ago, he tweeted (xeeted?) that there was a risk that someone would use GPT access to run a massive disinformation campaign. Lo and behold, someone came out of the woodwork and told WIRED how they did it.

a group of tiny bots swarm over a brain --ar 2:1 --s 400 --w 400 --chaos 25

Here’s the kicker: It costs them $400 to run the show.

Yo, if you don’t think governments have that kind of cash lying around, you must be from Greece in 2008. That’s a low barrier to entry, like so low you can’t limbo underneath it.

Here’s what the anonymous botter did:

They set up a couple of bots on X designed to respond to posts that framed the United States in a poor light. The bot would respond like a human and even source articles to disprove what the poster said.

Yes, you read that right; the GPT bots would bring receipts.

Think about the implications of that and imagine a world where everyone can make realistic accounts that are bots in disguise.

We’re not there yet, but this was a huge warning shot.

With $400, this person could combat any storyline they wanted and spread propaganda about a country or movement. This story comes on the heels of Meta announcing they broke up a vast Chinese disinformation campaign on Facebook.

These strategies to confuse and misinform people are getting sophisticated and undetectable because of AI. While there are ways to spot and prevent these networks from spreading, not enough is being done today to keep up.

Let’s hope we get up to speed faster than things appear right now.

Guys, Amazon did not take AI seriously, and it shows.

Let’s take a look:

1/ OpenAI made them an offer

AWS received an offer to partner with OpenAI. The deal included an exclusive partnership on the condition that AWS provide free cloud credits to OpenAI.

AWS said no, and the rest is history. Microsoft made a deal, and now they’re selling Azure contracts like hotcakes.

2/ Cohere and Anthropic sought investments

Both AI startups followed OpenAI’s footsteps and approached AWS with deals for credit. But they even offered equity in their packages, which would have been huge today.

They turned it down. Then Amazon contacted Cohere to invest later, but they said no.

3/ They missed a chance to launch before ChatGPT

Low key, this may have worked in their favor, but Amazon almost announced Bedrock, their AI model, right before ChatGPT came out. It didn’t happen because of a tech issue.

After seeing all the hype around ChatGPT, they postponed and returned to the drawing board.

So what’s the point here?

AWS didn’t capitalize enough on its spot in the cloud space, which puts its market share at risk—not a great look.

I doubt Azure will replace them at the top anytime soon, but the nascent splinter market for AI companies is a chance for others to catch up. They left the door open, and now they’re regretting it.
