🤖 Gosh Adobe Firefly Is Cool
AND AI Is Causing Significant Environmental Effects
What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. Don’t use AI to write your next apology, please.
These are headlines that don’t suck (unlike a certain video game):

Adobe has a major winner on its hands with Firefly.
The generative AI tool has created over 3 billion images and continues to bring new customers to Adobe’s product line. That’s what using AI hype to your advantage looks like, so other tech companies, take note.
But things are about to get even better.
At their MAX conference, the Adobe team announced a slew of new updates to Firefly that might make it THE one-stop spot for AI images. I promise that’s not an exaggeration.
See, the new update includes Firefly for Illustrator, a model that can craft vector graphics. If you don’t know already, creating that kind of illustration is not easy.
In fact, many generative models struggle with nailing vector graphics and getting them to play nicely with tools like Illustrator. Firefly wipes out this problem.
It’s a big step up that highlights a bunch of other notable updates.
Firefly itself is getting an upgrade to create more realistic humans. A new tool called mockup enables generated graphics that fit the dimensions of an object like a t-shirt or a soda can.
There’s a ton more, but we don’t have all the time in the world to go over everything Adobe announced. You can check out more details here!

an energy hog --ar 2:1
Bruh, AI is an energy hog.
A new study highlights the fact that AI servers could use 85-134 terawatt hours (TWh) annually by 2027. That’s the middle-of-the-round estimate, which is the same amount of energy consumption as some European countries.
And that’s only half the issue.
The data centers that host these models use 1% of the world’s energy (as of 2022). I don’t know what more we can say if you're not concerned about these facts.
However, companies may offset some of the consumption by using renewable energy. We don’t have the measurements there, but I don’t think these companies are champions of offsetting their carbon emissions.
So what can we do?
The quick, immediate need is transparency. Some of this data is guesswork because private companies can withhold a lot of this information.
We can and should fix that.
Knowing the extent of the damage is half the battle; otherwise, it’s hard to implore urgency.
