Where did that image come from?

That’s the question Google Image Search wants to answer with its new “About this image” feature. The more significant, critical part of this equation is Google’s goal with this tech: combat misinformation using AI.

It’s a lofty goal with the potential for missteps and failures at every turn, but you should be glad a company as large as Google is trying something like this. I know I am.

Let’s face it: AI image creation is only getting better.

Bad actors can create an alternate reality with a few detailed prompts and a network of bots.

Watermarks and metadata can only get us so far because people must access that information without barriers.

The hope is that Google Image Search provides accurate details surrounding an image’s origin and whether or not someone fact-checked it.

It’s a tool we already know how to use that can give better details for images we don’t understand the context of.

And that’s what I like about this tool–the context.

It’s one thing to flag an image and remove it. It’s another thing to explain the history of an image and why you might be seeing it again in a new context. That’s powerful.

Giving people more data to fight misinformation is a great way to use AI.
