NOBODY EVER EXPECTS THE OPEN-SOURCE INQUISITION
A memo from Google reverberated across the AI community, calling out the elephant in the office. Hint: it starts with “open.”
If you guessed OpenAI, you’re close, but the silent competition killer in the AI space is the open projects that developers are cobbling together.
Since the Meta’s LLaMA model leaked, AI hobbyists and independent researchers have been launching new Large Langauge Models like it’s the Wild, Wild West (the good kind, not the crappy Will Smith movie).
The Google memo brings up three critical points.
1/ The race has started. Most of Big Tech is already behind.
Meta is leading the way by being open-source-first from the draw and playing nice with software engineers and AI creators. Their strategy has untapped value and the benefits of going their route payout in the long term.
2/ Developing shiny, huge language models isn’t moving the needle.
The quality of the data in a model matters more than the quantity. Stanford proved that with their Alpaca model, and the movement towards cheaper, personalized AI assistants drives home that point.
You can’t charge as much for something that has a free alternative.
3/ Breakthroughs and momentum will come from working with the open-source community.
OpenAI and Google are boxing out researchers and hoarding knowledge. It validates their IP concerns and the lack of competitive edge, but the memo argues the genie is out of the bottle.
Fighting the fans is not getting companies closer to a value proposition.
Meta’s approach is working, and people need to take note. It’s time to come together and solve things as a group.
Notice that this is another leak from Alphabet. It’s not a great sign for the leadership team.
We waited to write about this news until we verified the validity of the memo, but things look legit. Big yikes for the executives at Google.
Their teams are pushing to be heard and get their ideas out there.
It’s either a 4D chess strategy or the worst morale problem in Google’s history.

THE TIPS & TRICKS TO MAKING A VIDEO USING AI
Prompt: movie poster Style: I Let AI Take the Wheel
Viral videos of AI-generated commercials and trailers are becoming the norm. You may feel this work is out of reach, but it’s not.
The Information broke down three creators' workflows, and the snippets of ideas and methods are illuminating.
They’re all doing similar things to get to a finished product.
First, they all edit with professional software, so there are creative limits to the AI parts. You can't say that this saves time, either.
Who cares, though? Well, let’s see how they do it.
The typical workflow is to use Midjourney to create the still images and then use Runway’s Gen 2 to animate them.
The Pizza Ad guy even used a VHS overlay to hide the mistakes and give it more character.
Definitely wasted 3 hours of my life making this today... Everything is AI from the VO to the video and images. Assembled in After Effects. More info below.

That’s smart, but they dropped the ball with the ElevenLabs narration. Their ad and the Michael Caine World War 2 documentary trailer relied on that tool, but they both sound empty.
Here's a World War 2 movie trailer I made this weekend, completely generated using AI text-to-video!
Script written by GPT-4, Michael Caine voiceover with @elevenlabsio, and video AI generated with @runwayml Gen-2 😮
We still have a ways to go but the potential is so exciting!

The best one—though none of these are winning Oscars anytime soon—was Kris Kashtanova’s Burning Man video.
Kashtanova is a well-regarded AI artist and a must-follow on Twitter for learning Midjourney prompting.
They elected to add AI music to their edit using Mubert and know the benefits of leaning into the trailer style.
This is text to video Burning Man I made today.
A video made just by writing text!
Made using @runwayml and #Gen2
Music isA.I. generated with Mubert.— Kris Kashtanova (@icreatelife)

Pro-tip: Runway can only make short clips; you always do trailers or commercials.
It’s a simple playbook, right? So what’s your excuse not to attempt your own video?
If you can do this, you can do almost anything with AI today. So it's worth trying!
