🤖 Google's Gemini Better Than GPT-4

PLUS: We're Going To Talk About A Tricky Subject

What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. Happy belated Birthday to all who celebrate 🎂

Here's what is on tap today:

  • Gemini has the potential to be a GPT-4 destroyer

  • AI chatbots and NSFW material are forever intertwined

  • NotebookLM is off to a rocky start

  • Using AI for headshots comes at a cost

There was a time when Google was the AI champion.

Everything they touched turned to gold, and companies envied their models. Then GPT-3 came out, and the goalpost moved. Google was left scrambling to meet the demands of an audience that knew there were better solutions.

It’s taken close to a year, but the rumors are creating a buzz—Gemini is on its way this fall and will blow GPT-4 out of the water. That’s the news we’re talking about today.

Why? Because everyone is starting to release Op-Eds about why that’s the case.

We’re here to simplify the chatter into a nice, digestible bit of news you can grasp quickly. So here’s the big idea: Google has the best infrastructure with the brightest developers.

They know the best, most efficient ways to construct Large Language Models, and Gemini is set to become the newest and grandest edition in a long line.

Google also has the pedigree and chops to win.

Before OpenAI released ChatGPT, Google had the best-performing LLM and the stats to back it up. We forget how many times Google’s set the pace and pushed benchmarks further.

We’re talking about the creators of transformer models and many of the concepts that make this whole ecosystem of generative AI work. If they put all that knowledge into Gemini and then crank it to 11, it’s bound to compete with GPT-4.

So, why, then, are there doubts?

Money is the root of all evil (and hesitation at Google). Google Search is the crown jewel of Alphabet and what keeps the lights on.

They don’t want to cannibalize themselves by dropping an advanced model that makes their services obsolete, so expect them to consider every outcome and work with slow, thoughtful intent.

Otherwise, Gemini can deliver a right hook straight to the jaw of GPT-4 that leaves OpenAI stumbling for the ropes. But only if Google stops pulling punches.

Let’s be honest: right now, somewhere in the world, someone is chatting rather, um, romantically with an AI chatbot.

We’ve danced around this subject many times, but here’s the truth: chat AI doesn’t exist without fan fiction writers and fandoms. Developers scraped their writing to train these models, and the audience they served craved this kind of product.

Ten years before ChatGPT was even a thing, people were messaging fictional characters (and sometimes, it wasn’t PG discussions).

We should respect what this community means to the future of AI and come to terms with how it shapes the discussions.

AI was a fun novel way to interact with fandom for over a decade, but now those same contributors are pissed that their work and activity were all absorbed into some corporate glob that wants to shut them out of the process.

So, while I don’t condone the creation of NSFW chatbots, I get the uproar.

It’s not only about the fact that 18+ content is part of the history of the internet that we can’t ignore. It’s also the realization that companies promise these features and filter them out when it’s time to go corporate.

We can’t ignore this mistreatment of users and let it slide. Sites like Character AI and Replika can, and should, do better.

They can’t profit off the backs of these creators and then toss them aside when it’s convenient.
