AND Another Actor Strike Over AI

What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. We hope you had a relaxing Labor Day.

Here's what is on tap today:

  • Taiwan’s election is broiled in a DeepFake scandal

  • SAG-AFTRA adds another strike to its list

  • OpenAI releases a teaching with AI guide

  • How the battle over Books3 will shape training data

DeepFakes went from concerning internet niche to political scandal faster than you can say, “Wait, what’s a deep fake.”

The latest story centers around how hard it is to discern fake audio from real tapes.

Earlier this year, someone sent out an audio message from Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky across select cities in Russia. It turned out the warning was a DeepFake, and the source is still unknown.

But this story is a bit different.

Controversial audio from the Taiwanese People’s Party (TPP) candidate, Ko Wen-je, was sent to newsrooms nationwide. The party responded with a swift and clear message: the audio is not authentic, and this company, Reality Defender, proves it.

Sounds simple, right? The issue is Reality Defender says it’s not a hundred percent certain it’s a DeepFake, and the AI technology that creates these audio files is getting too good to spot with complete confidence.

That’s a bad recipe.

Either scenario is troubling. Either a rival candidate planted fake audio to discredit their opponent, or a watchdog leaked real audio to the press, but we can’t trust the legitimacy.

This mess is the first of its kind, but misinformation campaigns to influence elections are not new. AI is just a new tool in nefarious actors' toolboxes.

We’re not ready for this and expect other elections in other countries to feature similar issues.

Generative AI has landed in the data domain with a bang.

Einblick is the AI-native data notebook that can write and fix code, create beautiful charts, build models, and much, much more–all with as little as one sentence. (pretty cool right?) This is all made possible by their AI agent, Einblick Prompt.

We all know the data analytics and data science process can be a real slog. From debugging syntax errors, to searching through documentation and Stack Overflow threads…it can be a real pain. That’s all before you even get to extracting meaningful insights from your data!

Luckily, Einblick Prompt removes all the tedious parts of the process by leveraging generative AI. Since Prompt is built into every data notebook, you don’t have to copy-paste any code, or switch between tabs. The code is generated straight into the notebook, and you can run it and test it immediately.

And the best part?

Prompt is context-aware. That’s right. You don’t have to type paragraphs of information about your data to get decent results. Prompt will infer which table to use, which libraries to import, and what data types are in your dataset. Plus, if there are any errors, you can debug instantly with the “Fix with Prompt” button.

Don’t take our word for it though. Try it out yourself–it’s free. (You don’t even need your own OpenAI API key–Einblick’s got you covered.)

video game characters join a strike --ar 2:1 --s 200 --chaos 25

SAG-AFTRA doubles down on their AI concerns with another strike.

This one centers around the contract between the actor’s guild and the video game industry. It’s another example of how AI shapes conversations around creative work and worker displacement.

The strike is not official yet. Voting opened for members today and closes on September 25th, so expect more news and official demands at that time.

Until then, we only know that AI is a part of the problem, but not the only controversy.

This strike could’ve happened without all the generative AI news. The top video game companies failed to adjust wages to rising inflation, and compensation issues exist across the entertainment space.

So, yes, AI is an issue, but the only reason it gets headlines is because it gets empathy. A faceless AI model replacing you is relatable. Actors asking for higher pay is less compelling of a headline.

AI issues give SAG leverage to negotiate, and they’re wise to take advantage, but we know it’s more than a risk of automation.

Still, given how entrenched both sides are in the other strikes, it's hard to say how things will resolve.

But, given the recent holiday, covering this news felt fitting.
