DEEPFAKES ARE COOL UNTIL THEY AREN’T

Over the weekend, fans of The Witcher decided to create deepfakes of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt. Pretty sweet, right?

Yes, but deepfake tech continues to struggle against the problematic aspects of its existence. Over the last week, stories dropped along a familiar trendline.

We’ve seen news on:

• Disinformation campaigns on YouTube and social media created using deepfakes of popular figures

• Actors and influencers outcry against the rising tide of technology used to generate false versions of themselves

• Nonconsenual creation of 18+ content that disproportionately affects women

Yikes. This Sh*t Ain’t Pretty

Right now, deepfake stuff is the pig with lipstick at the county fair. It’s a cute gag for the fair awards, but it’s a cruel joke to have the pig run the kissing booth. Consent and clarity are vital. 

Efforts to combat dangerous misinformation are scaling up and local governments are beginning to create their own interpretations and regulations for handling harm done by deepfakes.

We’re not facing a new problem here.

This tech is not fresh and researchers are working tiredlessly to watermark and detect deepfakes across the internet. We need a Fantastic Four for deepfake responsibility. 

1/ Permission to post images and videos is necessary. The same way we should not doxx people on the internet.

2/ Keep it light. The worst things I’ve seen forged on the internet relate to serious content or NSFW content. Bring back the memes instead plz.

3/ Tranparency is crucial to development. The techniques around spotting deep fakes need to scale to meet the output and the tools need watermarkings. It’s that simple.

4/ Educate people on the power of deepfakes and the fact these are only going to get better. When you consider how many people still don’t even know deepfakes exists or are at this level, you start to get worried. Tell your concerned aunt about deepfakes today.

Unfortunately, like the Fantastic Four, I am doubtful these principles will get traction and receive some spotlight.

HUMANS 1 - AI 0…

…Okay, not really. Ever since 2016, when Google’s AlphaGo beat the pants off Lee Sedol we’ve been trying desperately to even the score. It’s more like humans 1 - AI ♾️.

This Saturday, Kellin Perline beat the top-ranked AI Go system in 14 out of 15 matches. I don’t know much about this ancient Chinese game. In fact I only know two things:

1. It’s played on a 19×19 square grid with black and white pieces

2. Beating someone—or something—14-times like that in any game is a good ole’ fashioned mud hole stomping.

The Facts of the Match Matter More

It turns out Perline was not alone in this effort. FAR AI, a California-based research firm, helped devise a computer to form a special strategy. Together with Perline, they found simple ways to confuse the AI system into bad strategy.

In other words, we beat a machine using a different machine.

The strategy proved to be uncharacteristically effective and was a way to exploit the logic behind these machine learning systems. Some argue that the gameplan is so rudementary in Go that most average players would beat what they used.

The lack of predictable plans is exactly what tripped up the AI. While a human can react and counter with ease, a machine finds that level of illogic puzzling. They used a well-devised strategy that triggered a loophole.

When Lee Sedol lost to AlphaGo, he argued that the AI would be undefeated. What we did not know is that the great narrator in the sky was saying, “the AI would go on to be defeated,” right after his statement.

Why should you care about people playing a board game? Idk, I think it shows we’re still finding ways to prove flaws in deep-learning systems.
