What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. Try a cold shower followed by a cold plunge this morning. Compounding the cold means more success, right?

Here's your metaphorical plunge today:

  • Google underwhelmed viewers during their big event

  • Venture Capitalist give their take on AI

  • People are already breaking New Bing

  • AI deals with really, really old stuff like Alexander the Great and lead pipes

Google’s Event Was So Boring…

…that I want to talk about something else that tangentially relates to it. You can see a chapter-marked version of the event by clicking here.

The TL;DR is that the image-focused AI was cool, but they epically failed at showing off Bard.

Bard is supposed to be the next step in AI, connecting LaMDA to Google’s search engine and 1 billion users’ daily lives. Instead, they could not find the phone for a demo, and Bard made a clear error during the presentation (that error cost Google $100B in market cap).

BUT one part of the presentation did stand out: even Google felt the need to present its guidelines and safety measures for developing AI.

The company, whose motto is “Don’t Be Evil,” needed to explain how these tools will not be evil.

While Google did its presentation, several stories about shortcomings in AI were posted on:

Any of these stories is worth a deeper dive. However, we want to keep this newsletter to 3 minutes, so let me hit on the one stuck behind a paywall.

Let’s Talk about Bias

Be aware: this topic is heavy. Don’t expect a ton of jokes in this part.

You hear about bias all the time in artificial intelligence. Humans train AI. Humans are biased. AI becomes biased. It’s a tale as old as time.

We should consider who watches the watchmen.

A noteworthy image in the TechCrunch article, they sourced the data from Crunchbase

Funding for AI startups does not go to diverse founders. The fallout cascades into every part of AI training and building. AI recognizes patterns, so what pattern do you think it sees today?

Empowering everyone to reach a higher level of self is where many want AI to go. Sure, bias is an outcome of any AI, but that doesn’t mean we can’t improve upon the current state.

This imbalance is why Google and Microsoft announced their guidelines and why you’re reading this instead of Bard updates.

The talks about bias in the system will only ramp up as these new tools engrain themselves further into our day-to-day.

Remember, we all want AI to be good. No one wants SkyNet.

VC’s See 3 C’s in Seeds

Now read that headline three times fast out loud. Good, now that everyone else in the room is staring at you awkwardly, let’s discuss the latest in Venture Capitalism and AI.

Building a model is too expensive if your company is not funded by or part of Google or Microsoft.

That’s why VC funds and angels exist. AI’s sugar daddy wants a return on their investment when the AI startup becomes the next Google/Microsoft.

In 2021, crypto/web3/half-baked ideas were all the rage. A ton of seed capital (read that as money into early startups) went to founders with half-baked ideas. Meanwhile, the investors left AI/ML in the cold.

Oh, How the Turn Tables

Now, Paul Graham, Co-Founder of Y Combinator and startup messiah, recently tweeted about the AI boom and the outcomes it may lead to.

Paulie G, as I like to call him, worries that this tech boom will hurt early-stage investors.

Many unproven AI concepts will get funding from investors who don’t understand the underlying tech or don’t do diligence. All of them will come with big price tags to afford to train their models.

More money going into AI means more pre-idea AI companies get funding. All these efforts waterfall into many failed companies and terrible returns for investors.

Pre-seed investors are going wild again. They switched from Web3 to AI without a second thought, and the demand is only beginning to rise.

Keep an eye on your rich friends. They may sell their summer homes in the next few years if they back the wrong, expensive pony.

Good Content, Late Night

On the heels of Nothing Forever, we now present an AI Late Night show. I’m not sure why they decided to pick Conan of all hosts, but he’ll do.

I also love how the AI can’t decide if his suit should have two or three buttons. It’s the ultimate question in male fashion.
