🤖 Dall-E 3 Opens To Plus Users

AND AI Guardrails Aren't Doing Enough

What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. Do something good this month and give out full-size candy bars this Halloween. Do it for the kids.

Here's what to know today:

  • The guardrails around your favorite AI aren’t great

  • OpenAI releases the Kraken, er, Dall-E 3

  • Katy Perry gets Claude 2 in trouble

  • “Ring Attention” is a hot, new AI term to know

OpenAI created a door when they made ChatGPT.

a mysterious door at the end of a video game level --ar 2:1 --s 500

We all walked through it and marveled at the technology before us. That’s okay; no one is in trouble here. Using AI is something that you should be doing.

What we didn’t realize was that nefarious actors walked through that same door and began to experiment with ways to get ChatGPT to misbehave.

Then OpenAI claimed it made a lock by using new guardrails to limit ChatGPT’s ability to go off script.

That lock is busted.

A research paper from folks at IBM, Virginia Tech, Princeton, and Stanford found that OpenAI’s GPT-4 is not as sturdy as the company makes it out to be. In fact, the exploit they found feels too easy.

All you need is a GPT-4 API and some custom instructions. That’s it.

We’re not talking about a jailbreaking exploit, either.

The worst part of this slip-up is that it can affect anyone using GPT-4 as their backend model. Let’s say you use GPT to make an AI tutor; that tool you present lacks the guardrails you think it has.

That’s a significant design flaw and evidence that we’re still struggling to reign in the darker side of AI’s potential.

It’s like I said.

OpenAI promised us a lock on the door, but it turns out everything is less secure than we realized.

Dall-E 3 is now available for all paying ChatGPT users.

So either find your friend with access or cancel your Disney+ subscription because this sucker is worth it, especially if you don’t have access to Midjourney.

But this begs the question: will free users ever get a taste of this updated image generator?

Probably not. Look, I don’t mean to sound blunt, but OpenAI’s goal is to bring in revenue. They need shinier bait to convert subscribers. Dall-E 3 is as polished as they come.

That’s why I don’t buy the “safety delay” story.

As we mentioned above, OpenAI struggles with that issue regardless. The slow roll to plus users was to handle the volume and ensure it’d get used. While safety is a part of that, it’s not the only reason they eased into the release.

But if they were this cautious with a limited release, I can’t imagine them giving everyone access to this tool.

Stories about exploiting the moderation tools are already popping up, and OpenAI can’t handle a story like that every week. So you may need to get your wallet out if you want to try this one, sorry.
