🔍 ChatGPT woke up Google
ChatGPT has awoken the sleeping AI giant.
If OpenAI's risk tolerance is 90/100, Google's AI team is at 5/100. Google won't release anything AI related until it's confident the public will respond positively.
That all changed when OpenAI released ChatGPT in November.
Soon after, Google CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly declared a "code red." The search giant had been caught off guard by the AI bot's rapid rise and Pichai needed a plan.
The narrative was quickly shifting to ChatGPT killing Google, followed by reports that the company's rival Microsoft would incorporate OpenAI's tools into all its services, including Bing.
In true superhero fashion, Pichai called for backup from the dynamic duo, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The co-founders, who had been busy saving the world from their own pet projects, reportedly donned their capes and had "several" meetings with Google executives and Pichai himself in December to discuss Google's AI strategy.
The incredibly risk-averse company now allegedly has over 20 new AI products in the pipeline. Furthermore, Google is planning to demo a search engine with chatbot features later this year.
That's how scared Google is.
This is the first time that Page and Brin have been closely involved in the company's operations since 2019. Like all heroes, they come back when they're needed most.
Whether OpenAI is an existential threat to Google or not, we're excited: more competition for the larger AI community is always welcome.
Plus, there will soon be more toys for us AI nerds.
