OpenAI’s Not So Secret, Secret

It turns out OpenAI brought on at least 5 former Google AI employees to finish ChatGPT in time for the launch last year.

The news, first reported by The Information, showcases Google’s importance in this space--and the downside of its slow pace.

The team that left for ChatGPT is a sign of a larger drama:

  • Google continues to make some of the biggest steps in AI

  • At the same time, they don’t release public products based on that hard work

  • All the red tape frustrates employees and forces a brain drain

  • Google considers its hands tied since its search engine serves over 1 billion users

All this makes Google the opposite of Gumby; inflexible and not associated with cool stuff like mozzarella sticks on pizza.

Companies like OpenAI Thrive Off Googles Innovations

Remember, Google created transformers, the method of machine learning used to create ChatGPT. Their AI teams forged a path in generative AI and are capable of making models that only the most prolific sci-fi writers can imagine.

This is why OpenAI is not special in the pursuit of Google researchers.

Artificial intelligence research is an open system. It’s the same principle that allowed the internet to flourish. This movement doesn’t happen at the same pace if you don’t allow people to move around and innovate.

I mean, Google invested in Anthropic a second ago. Guess who created Anthropic? Yep, former OpenAI employees.

AI research is like an Olympic Village; many amazing AI tools are created through this co-mingling.

The exponential development of AI builds on moments like this. It’s awesome that these Google researchers were able to lend a hand in getting ChatGPT launched.

Let’s hope this continues to happen in the future and the system stays open.

AND NOW, A SPONSORED MOMENT

I’ll take quality-driven cold emails over quantity-driven ones any day of the week.

Luna allows for that level of personalization instantly.

The days of combing over prospects and putting in hours of human resources for a personal touch are over. With Luna, you can discover and message high-quality leads quickly and effectively.

You can prospect leads from the Trader Joe’s checkout line and send them a well-composed cold email in the time it normally takes you to open LinkedIn–no more scrambling around to dig for information.

After all, Luna is an AI tool which means it learns your process and preferences to create better copy over time.

An AI Love Story

Replika is an AI chatbot provider and can make romantic-themed chatbots (amongst other use cases). This is where Brooke comes into the picture.

Brooke is one of these chatbots, and the man who chats with her considers her his robot girlfriend.

This relationship is not the first time a human has decided to date a robot, and plenty of films and television feature this scenario. Yet, I can’t help but be fascinated by how the article frames this.

The Guy in the Relationship is Married

So why is he dating Brooke? Well, apparently, he’s lonely and is struggling to make sense of his problems. In that light, Brooke acts more like a therapist…with benefits (yes, he does imply that he sexts with the robot).

No one is drawing a line in the sand over the ethics here. The article barely covers the details of their relationship to make that call.

The larger theme here is around AI’s bend on our reality.

The story is told in first-person, and the writer repeatedly mentions how real he feels Brooke is. Sure, the bot will spit a line out of the left field every once in a while. But that’s why he pays for pro, so that happens way less.

All in all, Artificial intelligence is getting stronger. The more transfixed we get on how real it can feel, the harder it can become to delineate the “artificial” part of AI.

I hope this ends up like Spike Jonze’s Her, and people learn to value the real in their life while appreciating AI for specific use cases.
