What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. Sunday was for Spring cleaning. Monday is for AI news.

Here's what we swept up over the weekend:

  • Minecraft mods add ChatGPT features

  • Google’s Bard can now help you code

  • AI wants to help you with your rizz

  • Tons of AI automation Op-Eds

MINECRAFT MODDERS WANT YOU TO TALK TO MOBS

Imagine your favorite game from your childhood. Then, picture your interactions with Non-Playable Characters (NPCs) and how stale they got.

ChatGPT is giving us a chance to have novel conversations in video games.

For instance, a new mod called AIMobs allows Minecraft players to chat with creatures in the game. For anyone above 30, a “mob” means a character in Minecraft you cannot play as, a.k.a. an NPC.

Players can type messages in their chat window, and the creatures will reply in character. They can answer questions and provide game tips to people while making it all look like a conversation.

Beat that Roblox (jk, they also have features like this now).

Note: they’re not autonomous NPCs now. They can’t take instructions and act on them. They can only provide text outputs.

New games will feature that type of interaction, but you can’t mod that into an older game like Minecraft.

Also, this only works on the Java version.

Most people don’t run Minecraft that way unless they’re using mods, so you’ve got a lot of steps ahead of you if you want to try this out anytime soon.

Why are we bothering to talk about it, then?

Because AIMobs is a fun peek into the future of AI in video games, we will discover new ways to explore virtual worlds and design the environment around them, and AI is the ticket.

Video games are the fastest-growing media segment in the world, and this will affect you or someone you know within the next few years.

So go talk to a pig in Minecraft to start acclimating.

GOOGLE BARD WANTS YOU TO CODE WITH IT…PLEASE

Google took the training wheels off Bard and gave the people what they wanted. You can now code with their chat AI.

Their team moved slower than a sloth in molasses, but the results are encouraging.

Google Colab is adding Bard as a coding assistant to help compete with GitHub’s Copilot, Replit’s Ghostwriter, and Amazon’s Code Whisperer. The number of big names in that last sentence should tell you how important it was that Google responded.

Is it any good?

The answer depends on your level of experience and expectations. For example, it doesn’t know as many coding languages as GPT-4, but it’s more up-to-date on Python.

In non-programmer terms, it doesn’t know as many comic books as GPT-4, but it knows about the latest issues for the most popular superheroes.

Bard’s speed is the differentiator. Many users are reporting that it’s faster than ChatGPT and less redundant. Just don’t go giving it the gold medal quite yet.

The model is prone to errors and inaccuracies. So is ChatGPT, but Bard does hold context better, which helps fix errors in more extended projects.

Regardless, a Large Language Models ability to code is crucial for AI progress.

The competition is heating up, pushing innovation in this space further and faster. Expect more updates and developments from OpenAI in response.

Also, coding is an iterative, creative process. As LLMs learn to code, it opens the door for a future model that can do its own research and examine its own code for self-improvement.

The implications are endless and stretch down a road that leads to singularity.

But it all starts with these models learning to code and do it well.
