🤖 What's with the ChatGPT Clones?
PLUS: Midjourney v5 Looks Incredible

The AI researchers announced a new tool called OpenChatKit. The new foundational model is open-source, so everyone can use it to develop ChatGPT competitors.
Now—the term “open-source” gets tossed around a lot in this space.
OpenAI literally got its name from the mission to be open to everyone. But in reality, many of these large research teams are as open as that jar of pickles in the back of my fridge (I swear I’ll get it open one day).
OpenChatKit is 100% replicable and customizable. Everything is accessible from the source code to the dataset and even the weights.
Their first punch at that effort is creating a massive ripple effect.
Basic chat AI products flooded my product research this last day and a half. Of course, they were already starting to come in hot and heavy thanks to the OpenAI API release and LLaMA, but the floodgates are open.
Which feels ironic.
OpenAI released ChatGPT because no one was creating the tool from their API. Sure, they updated it with GPT-3.5 before anyone else had it. Still, a company could’ve made the same interface months before OpenAI.
Suddenly, tons of slightly altered versions crowd app stores and ad space. It never pays to be late to the party.
The best move a builder can make here is to use something like OpenChatKit and create a unique experience that doesn’t feel anything like all the chatbots out there.
The tool is out there. Someone needs to seize the opportunity.

MIDJOURNEY V5 RELEASE IS COMING SOON
Midjourney is one of the best-known generative AI companies for a reason. They launched their Discord less than a year ago and are already profitable, according to the founder of the research lab, David Holz.
Early test images from the rating party show a massive increase in image quality, but don’t pop the champagne yet.
The images people are showing are different from what version 5 will be. You can see that in the image above.
Instead, it’s a way to help tune and teach the new version before release.
During the Midjourney v4 rating party, you’d see images entirely different from what the model is capable of today. So you should expect that to hold true.
But—I mean—the images are pretty cool.
The realism in the released test images is unbelievable. The AI seems to be handling human subjects a lot better too, and it wasn’t too shoddy to begin with.
I didn’t think the hype for generative AI could climb much higher this week with the news about GPT-4 sweeping up everyone’s attention. Yet, Midjourney dropped a dime.
The finger anatomy will improve massively with this version, and the standard for AI art will rise to another level.
Generative AI continues to showcase the fact it’s a comet of disruption hurdling towards our preconceived notions of what computers can do.
Get in their Discord already if you haven’t tried it out. Even version 4 is fun to play with.

Whoa, that’s a lot of math for a writer to take in, but glad to see Bing standing up for itself. I am going to level with you…I have no idea what this means. I find it hilarious to watch someone get Bing to go this deep into 1+1=2. Glorious.
