PLUS: ChatGPT Also Sees Visits Dip

What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. ChatGPT dominated the news yesterday, and not in a good way.

Here's the scoop:

  • ChatGPT was forced to disable the Bing Browsing feature

  • Also, ChatGPT is experiencing growing pains

  • The New York Times details how smaller AI companies lean on Big Tech

  • Stanford has a sh*t ton of AI classes now

OOPS, YOU WEREN’T SUPPOSED TO DO THAT

OpenAI released a Tweet on Tuesday. The message was simple: they’re disabling Bing Browsing because it’s showing content it’s not supposed to.

In other words, ChatGPT Plus users asked GPT-4 to read content from paywalled links. It’s a big issue but fixable.

In fact, Greg Brockman, President of OpenAI, claims the problem will get fixed ASAP. So, in the meantime, try out Google Bard or Bing Chat for your browsing questions.

It’s not a great start for ChatGPT browsing.

Plus users got access to the beta to help spot bugs, but this is a considerable gap. A lawsuit might've happened if someone else had picked up on this problem before OpenAI. But I’ll admit that’s speculation.

We’ll never know how many people used this loophole and how deep the problem goes. So, let’s talk about what we do know.

It’s time to address the real issue.

Bing plays second fiddle to Google. We all agree, right?

In my experience, that limitation plays out constantly in my interactions with ChatGPT. People getting fed up with the limits of the browse feature did what they could to make ChatGPT useful again.

The tool wasn’t working well. ChatGPT gets stuck in browsing loops and fails all the time. You’re better off researching the content and feeding the found text into the model.

So good riddance, and please, OpenAI, fix more than the paywall bug.

Google’s Search Generative Experience is better right now, and that’s saying something.

You and I have a need. A need that is so basic and primal that it drives us bonkers when it’s not met. I’m talking about the need to be understood.

Imagine that you’re trying to explain the ideas behind a new dashboard to a teammate. You have two options: write documentation that will be outdated in a week or exhaust yourself with a video that takes 15 tries to get right. Neither one sounds all that great, but that’s where guidde comes in.

guidde is a generative AI platform that helps you communicate and be understood.

Whether you’re onboarding new customers, creating how-to videos, or syncing with your team on a new product feature, guidde helps make that content 11x faster than the current standard and keeps things engaging.

All you do is record the workflow. The AI comes in and handles the rest.

It creates a point-by-point storyline and allows you to personalize every detail. You can even add an AI avatar to it. Everything about a guidde video shouts professional, and it’s instantly shareable.

Remember, you deserve to be understood. Level up your communication game with guidde and never look back.

ARE YOU NOT USING CHATGPT?

Similarweb shows a dip in usage for ChatGPT in June. It’s the first time visits to the tool went negative.

Don’t worry; the numbers aren’t too bad. Desktop and mobile website visits decreased by 9.7% in June from May. Unique visitors declined by 5.7%, and the average time people spent on ChatGPT dropped by 8.5%.

Yawn, let’s talk more than numbers.

I’m a Journalism major. Writing out numbers in such a basic style makes me want to pass out. Let’s drill into why this moment is happening.

These are three reasons ranked by most likely to least likely:

1/ It’s the summer…duh

Students aren’t writing essays right now. They don’t need homework help. Their ChatGPT shortcut is gathering dust while they play video games or travel.

2/ There’s an app for that

OpenAI released the ChatGPT app a while back, but it’s had enough time to saturate the user base. Some people will only use ChatGPT on their phones now.

That would explain the drop in mobile site visits. I haven’t visited the site on my phone since I got the app.

3/ The hype is dying down

People are willing to try new things when it’s the hot new thing. However, ChatGPT cannot do everything, and word travels. OpenAI didn’t need to market a ton for their new product features, but they’ll only attract a small market segment without effort.

They need something with more oomph than a browsing feature to get the holdouts to jump ship, and the competitors have options, too.

All these are viable reasons, but the summer break is the most apparent reason for the dip.

No one is panicking at OpenAI, but if the trend continues, sound the alarm.

They need to be anti-fragile and not a tool you only use when you want to do homework. Google passed that phase, and OpenAI can also make the leap.

He looks like he knows what he’s doing, but if that shark doesn’t dream of sushi or run a restaurant in a subway station, then I’m not buying it.
