Here's what is on tap today:

  • China arrested a man for using ChatGPT to make fake news

  • Universal Basic Income is directly tied to an AI future

  • ChatGPT is causing investment fervor

  • Google Search is in danger of going extinct

CHATGPT FOUGHT THE LAW & THE LAW WON

Chinese authorities arrested a man in connection to a fake news report about a train accident that never occurred.

They say a man created a fake story about a derailment using ChatGPT and then violated internet guidelines using bots to help push it across the web.

It’s the first known case in China that involves ChatGPT.

Prompt: robot behind bars Style: Propaganda Poster

The police said they arrested the suspect for using AI to create false information. Their problem wasn’t the fact the dude bypassed verification steps to create bots or that they accessed a foreign site illegally.

The police arrested him because he used artificial intelligence to make up fake news.

China is not playing around here.

China tries hard to control the narrative its citizens see when they search the internet. The risk of AI telling fables and taking power away from their hands pushed them to this outcome.

Police arrested the suspect, Hong, for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” However, this stems from the January regulation that requires citizens to label AI-generated photos and text.

He faces 5-10 years in prison. That’s the same minimum sentence the US gives for cybercrime with the intent to further terrorism.

I don’t know if that time matches the crime, but I’m no Judge.

AI PUSHES US CLOSER TO UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME

Our future is uncertain, and AI advancements aren’t helping anyone’s anxiety around automation.

Sam Altman dances around that Universal Basic Income (UBI) question as much as any tech exec, but The Walrus published an Op-Ed that warns about its inevitable future and Altman’s role in it.

OpenAI launching ChatGPT encouraged everyone to reconsider their value in the face of a shifting economy. The robots are coming for your job; only now they can write and code, too.

No AI company is coy about its goal. They want computers to do everything for us and AGI to handle all our erroneous tasks.

If my personal AI does everything for me, what do I do?

Tony Stark needed J.A.R.V.I.S. and Pepper Potts to make it through his day as a billionaire CEO/superhero, so clearly, not every job will go on the chopping block.

But most jobs will get automated out by AI in the future.

UBI is the easy answer. Toss cash out the problem like the early days of COVID and pray that people find things to do with their time.

The risk is that we give tech companies more control over our lives and increase our dependence on subsidies. No one wants to end up like the floating couch potatoes in WALL-E, right?

Jobs won’t ever go away, but AI forces us to reconsider what we value and should pursue.

An alternative to UBI is out there, but we all are waiting for someone else to decide.

That’s the thing about AI, if any of these questions had easy solutions, we’d be further along than we are now.
