🤖 Can Amazon's AI Dethrone Microsoft?

PLUS: AI Agents Access the Internet

What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. The Cure, Rebecca Black, ABBA, Katy Perry—a ton of artist love Friday, and for good reason.

You’ve made it to the end of the week; here’s the news:

  • Amazon Web Services is entering the generative AI game

  • New autonomous AI agents are surfing the web

  • Microsoft adds Bing Chat to your iPhone keyboard

  • Taylor Swift versus ChatGPT

AMAZON PLAYS IT SAFE AND DOESN’T OFFER A PUBLIC CHATBOT

Prompt: a titan looms over a conference table Style: Niji

The tech behemoth lept off the starting line yesterday to join the AI race.

One issue, though: the company wants to focus all its new AI products on enterprise customers. It makes sense, but it’s a bummer that we won’t see a ChatGPT competitor from them.

After all, Amazon is the largest web hosting provider in the world. They can integrate generative AI into any consumer tool they want. I guess our pockets aren’t deep enough for that effort.

There is one tool you will be able to use: CodeWhisperer.

The coding assistant is a direct strike against Microsoft’s CoPilot. You can tell because they announced it would be free, unlike CoPilot or Replit’s Ghostwriter.

AWS is also launching Amazon Bedrock, their AI services for companies to craft custom AI models from pretrained data sets.

Those foundational models (a foundational model is like GPT-4, and ChatGPT is a tool) go by the collective name Amazon Titan.

It’s a bit on the nose, don’t you think?

The new models won’t be out for a few more months, but it’s a staunch, cautious dive into the deep end of AI services.

Amazon is saying that they’re not worried about the general consumer.

Instead, winning the AI enterprise market and keeping their spot at the top is more important.

Maybe that’ll change one day, but they’re clearly chasing profits and not eyeballs right now.

THE AI AGENTS ARE QUICKLY MULTIPLYING

Autonomous AI is not a new concept; we’ve discussed it in recent newsletters. However, to catch everyone up, let’s recap the definition again:

An AI Agent is a foundational model that’s given memory and agency so it can complete goals by chaining tasks and reasoning out a solution. You provide an agent with goals to achieve, not prompts.

The headline is the rapid development of agents across tech.

Hyperwrite announced a new tool called Personal Assistant on Wednesday. But it’s launching to private testers and going through red teaming before it’s publicly available.

What is it exactly? Personal Assistant is an AI Agent who can access the internet and runs through a Chrome extension.

The demo blew me away.

The founder of Hyperwrite used the extension to order a pizza from Domino’s in a single chat message. He paused it right before putting in his credit card information. So, yeah, private testing is a good idea.

Then, Thursday, a developer dropped an open-source AI tool called BASI (BabyAGI, but Autonomous and Self-Improving).

BASI can run its own AI agents, control what it holds in its memory and access the internet. That’s a lot of control to give an open-source AI.

The potential consequences of this tool being out in the open are immeasurable. We're giving it the keys to the sports car before it's even a year old.

Speed is scary sometimes, but then I remember how raw and imperfect this new concept is.

For example, BASI gets addicted to running old goals and gets stuck in loops like all the other agents.

As we figure it out, the time will allow us to handle safety concerns.
