🤖 AI Takes to the Skies
PLUS: A Fast Food AI Meltdown
What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. I think today is the day you redeem your Starbucks points. You’ve earned it.
Here's what to read while you enjoy that coffee:
AI flies a fighter jet for 17 hours
McDonald’s AI rollout is going poorly
It turns out Bing made mistakes too
OtterPilot might be the cutest name for an AI tool—ever
Prompt: Tom Cruise as a Transformer fighter jet Style: Steven Spielberg
Highway to the Singularity Zone!
Lockheed Martin let everyone in on the secret: VISTA flew for 17 hours in December last year. The moment marks the first time AI flew a tactical aircraft unassisted.
VISTA stands for Variable In-flight Simulation Test Aircraft. According to the press release, the test marks a huge breakthrough and is the biggest thing in fighter jets since Top Gun: Maverick came out.
Isn’t AI already in Airplanes?
We’ve seen plenty of examples and use cases for AI in jets and planes of all types. A human cannot fly a modern military jet without a computer assisting the pilot.
Instead, like a few other things in life, this flight matters more because of how long it lasted.
17 hours of flight means they had to refuel the VISTA X-62. If they could refuel it without a human pilot helping, that’s impressive. I say “if” because no one knows all the details about what “breakthroughs” happened here.
We didn’t even know what specific AI tech was used during the test. They’ll keep that close to the chest, but context clues tell us this is a step up from current models.
I don’t see them going full uncrewed soon, but military developments in AI are always noteworthy, given the implications.
INITIALIZING SPONSOR…
It’s about time you upgraded your profile photo, don’t you think?
The NFT you bought two years ago or your headshot from college isn’t going to cut it anymore, so I suggest you try Avatarize.
In 3 simple steps, they’ll take you from one picture to 50+ unique styles ranging from cyberpunk to art deco. They offer over 120+ avatars and deliver better-generated images faster than anyone else.
Quality matters. You can’t get these same results from some google collab sheets.
See the difference their process makes.
No McDonald’s, I Didn’t Want Fries with That
Four years ago, the golden arches bought a company called Apprente. The AI company can understand speech and would be a perfect way to automate drive-thru kiosks.
Then sh*t hit the fan.
TikTok videos are starting to pour in from Chicago, where the tech is being tested for rollout. Customers needed help to get the AI to stop adding ketchup packets and 9 sweet teas to their simple orders.
One guy kept asking for Mountain Dew and getting a medium Diet Coke. But that one makes sense.
McDonald’s doesn’t serve Mountain Dew, my guy—poor drive-thru bot.
Corporate was Expecting 95% Accuracy
Reports say the kiosks are only around 80% accurate. In AI terms, that’s not horrible, but nowhere near ready for a massive rollout.
Yet, bots already handle a lot of fast-food interactions. We hear voice recordings at most drive-thrus, and plenty of other restaurants are testing their own AI ordering systems.
Still, the world is not ready for this level of public interaction.
We still struggle to get our prompts right with ChatGPT. You need to speak to AI in a way that’s different from what we do with humans, and that behavior needs to change over time.
Till then, bring on the ketchup packets.
