🤖 AI Lies, Victims Are Helpless

PLUS: Apple Is Moving Towards More Generative AI

What's up? You're reading Inclined AI. We didn’t start a riot by promising free game consoles. So we’re already doing better than Twitch Streamers.

Here's what is on tap today:

  • When AI lies, it’s hard to do anything about it

  • Apple’s job listings show AI push

  • D&D illustrators get a warning about AI

  • Every Amazon team is now working on Gen AI

Don’t trust everything Chat AI says.

You should know that by now, but I wanted to reiterate it. The news that brings this back to the surface is a New York Times article about AI lying and its repercussions.

I can sum that piece up in two sentences: AI says something untrue about real people. Current laws and regulations don’t empower us to handle it.

Congrats, you don’t need to get passed the paywall, but here’s the rub.

The piece by Tiffany Hsu mentions a term most people don’t know, “Frankenpeople.”

frankenstein's monster smiles and gives you a thumbs up --ar 2:1 --s 400 --style raw --chaos 50 --v 5.1

Researchers coined the term to define a made-up character who’s a culmination of real people or a false identity for an actual person crafted due to patterns. And I love it.

Frankenpeople describes what happens to a “T” (even if Frankenstein is the scientist; we get it). The AI is pulling strings together and trying to follow the most logical path.

A scientist whose work is near many prestigious awards is a perfect example. Most LLMs will misconnect that person to the recognition and then claim they won some.

It happens, and calling them Frakenpeople smooths the rough edges.

It’s our new “hallucinations” term that whitewashes AI issues and explains them away with mumbo-jumbo. The field is full of them.

But, on the other hand, it does help, and that’s okay. Look, it sucks that AI lies about people, and they can’t do much. But people can still fact-check that right now.

Creating easy-to-grasp terms around the issue raises awareness, and that’s a great thing to keep doing for the general public.

So long live the Frankenpeople!

Have you noticed something odd about the OpenAI app on your iPhone?

Anytime I go to use it, my phone heats up faster than Texas asphalt in the summer. And it’s a newer model, too.

Apple is aware of the issue. They also know that many other tech giants are pushing forward with generative AI in ways that affect Apple’s market share.

Tim Cook doesn’t like losing market share or falling behind.

This is why you shouldn’t be surprised to hear that Apple posted a slew of jobs for researchers and engineers. All the jobs focus on generative AI and Large Language Models.

The Cupertino company has one mission: keep up.

Developing generative AI tools in-house and finding ways to pump more brain power into their AI lab in Paris is one focus for recruiting. But other posts seem focused on iPhones and iPads.

Apple wants its tools to run LLMs without the need for cloud use. The breakthrough would be a runaway success if they beat others to it.

Time will tell, but one thing is sure: all of Big Tech is moving in the same direction, and that direction is AI.
