AI IS MAKING ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN DISASTER RELIEF

On the ground in Turkey and Syria, people search for earthquake victims day and night. In the sky, xView2, an AI that uses “semantic segmentation,” assists in the efforts and helps coordinate rescue planning.

We live in a world where AI can do much more than chat with you.

Ground teams from the UN’s International Search and Rescue Advisory Group are using xView2 to lend a hand. The AI helps identify structural damage in buildings so rescuers can map out their actions better.

But It’s Hard to Measure the Direct Impact Here

Crews were slow to react, and this crisis is a tragedy on multiple scales. Unfortunately, I don’t have the guts to tell you that AI saved lives here.

What I can say is the tool certainly helped rescue crews across the region and gave them the insights they needed to move faster. Some people even report that xView2 identified problematic buildings that the team would have otherwise missed. That’s a win.

Yet plenty of people there to help refused to use this service.

I don’t blame them. New technology can be scary, and you don’t want to learn something on the fly when you need to trust the process you know.

That fact does not take away from the leaps this tech has grown in such a short time.

Three years ago, the US Department of Defense and its collaborators held an open competition to help develop xView2. The goal is to keep this open source and for public use. Imagine if more efforts were focused on humanitarian aid in AI. Governments across the world should be taking notes.

You know, I want to call xView2 a suit of armor around the world, but, uh, I know how that ends. Even so, the fact artificial intelligence has matured to this point is encouraging. Keep it coming!

AN INSTAGRAM INFLUENCER ADMITS HE FAKED HIS PHOTOS USING AI

Jos Avery told Ars Technica that his 26k followers did not realize his photos were fake, and it was time for him to come clean. Is it bad that I’m kind of impressed?

Avery did all his work through Midjourney and spent lots of time getting his posts how he wanted them. As a result, he got likes and made great content.

Why all the hate?

Okay, So He Straight-Up Lied

AI art is still art, but the problem comes when you intentionally try and deceive people. Avery admits that he would either deflect questions about his process or lie about what camera he used.

Then there’s the legal quandary around the fact that Midjourney learns from other artists' work and their photos and drawings are what boosted Jos Avery’s account and perception in theory.

The situation is stickier than a toddler’s hands after two seconds in a candy shop.

If he estimates that 5% of his followers knew it was fake from the start, how long before more people caught on to his ploy?

But it’s not the first time we’ve seen AI on Instagram. Tons of fake influencers are cropping up on the app.

Seven years ago, a project began to make Lil Miquela, an AI influencer with 2.5m+ followers now. There’s even an Amazon series around Superplastic, a group of synthetic celebrities, in the works.

The whole app is about filters and edits.

It’s good that Avery admitted he lied. But I want to see him post more now that it’s all out there. He’s an AI-influencer-hybrid—the first of many.
